The Vehicle
The car is a 2012 Audi A8 from the D4 generation (internal platform code 4H), built in Germany in March 2012. This generation runs Audi’s MMI 3G infotainment system with a motorized retractable dashboard display. While advanced for its era, MMI 3G predates factory smartphone mirroring and offers no straightforward path to add a front camera.
The Problem
The owner’s request was simple: add a front camera. The A8 already had a working factory rear camera for reverse parking, but nothing covering the front — a real limitation on a long-nose sedan in tight Dubai parking and when nosing out of blind driveways. On top of that, the MMI 3G head unit had no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, so navigation and music still relied on the aging built-in system.
